A Type C visa is needed for short-term stays up to a maximum of 90 days in any
180-days’ period. On a Type C visa, you can do business, attend study programs, visit friends/relatives,
participate in cultural or sporting events etc.
If you wish to visit the country for tourism and
leisure, business purposes, visiting friends or relatives, official visits, medical care, short-term
study and research purposes, you need to apply for a Schengen Visa.
The Schengen Consulate may
issue you a single, double or multiple-entry visa valid for 90 days, depending on your reasons for
visiting the Schengen Region and the frequency of your visits.
As Type C visas are valid throughout the Schengen Area, they are commonly
referred to as Schengen visas.
A short-stay visa, Schengen visa allows the visa holder to travel to
any of the members of the Schengen Area for a 90 days period per stay for business or tourism.
Schengen Area includes 26 countries – Austria, Denmark, Malta, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland,
Netherlands, France, Greece, Iceland, Belgium, Poland, Sweden, Latvia, Germany, Czech Republic, Hungary,
Lithuania, Luxembourg, Slovenia, Estonia, Italy, Slovakia, Finland, and Liechtenstein.
You cannot stay beyond 90 days in any 180-days’ period.
There are three
categories of Schengen visa
Short stay visa: This visa allows for single or multiple entries and you
can stay in the Schengen territory up to 90 days in the validity period of six months.
Long stay
visa: This is issued for a period exceeding 90 days and are issued by the countries. The national
legislation rules apply here.
Airport transit visa: This is required for people belonging to certain
countries.

A Type D visa is required for a stay that is more than 90 days in duration. A national visa, Type D visas are commonly given for – prolonged medical treatment, family reunification, work, or studies in Switzerland.
Typically, once your application is considered to be admissible, a decision will
be taken within 15 calendar days. In certain cases, the processing time can be extended up to 30 or even
60 days.
The processing time can be extended to a maximum of 30 days if more scrutiny of the
application is needed.
In certain specific cases where some additional documentation is required,
the processing time can be extended further, that is, to a maximum of 60 days.
